This town,
worldwide famous as the "capital" of the footwear
manufacturing, boasts outstanding works of art, such as
the Ducal square, one of the most
beautiful piazzas in Italy, and the "Sforza"
Castle, that stands out among all others in
Lombardy.
Vigevano, situated in the north of Italy,
has a strategic position: almost at the same distance from Milan
(35 km), Novara and Pavia; it lies in an agricultural area, known
for its rice fields, on the left bank of the River
Ticino.
The most
ancient heart of the town dates back to the early Middle ages. At
that time it was a fortified
village; then it
become a free city state, but after a while it fell under the
rule of some noble families: in particular of the Visconti and Sforza families. Under the latter,
the city entered its golden era becoming a ducal city, an
important centre for traders and skilled craftsmen.
Nowadays, it has about 60,000 inhabitants.
