Rocca
Vecchia: a fortress for
checking the road to Milan. |
 |
Maschio: it
has a quadrilateral shape and four angular towers.
Moreover it has XVth century double lancet windows. |
 |
Strada
Coperta (or roofed/covered
road): it was built to link
the castle to what remained of the ancient fortress (the
Rocca Vecchia), reaching the open countryside and so
overpassing the village houses below. This covered ed
clevated road is on two parallel tiers, one elevated and
one underground. It is a very important structure and a
remarkable achievements due also to its length (164 mt
long and 7 mt wide). |
 |
"Bramante"
Tower : the tower of the
castle was built in different phases, starting from 1198,
but was finally completed by Donato Bramante around 1494.
The spyglass-shaped Tower looks like "
Filarete" Tower in the "Sforzesco" castle
of Milan. At that time it had the role of the honour
entrance to the castle, from the Ducal Square. The Tower
is situated at the town's highest point and from its
battlements there is a wonderful view over the square,
the castle and the whole town. |
 |
Falconiera: it is
an open gallery, work of Bramante, and has fine 48
columns. The "Falconry" was the place used to
breed falcons and hawks and train them to hunt. |
 |
Loggia
delle Dame: the elegant
"duchess's quarters" were added to the rear
part of the "Maschio". |
