| The delightful koala lives in eucalyptus trees in Northeast and Southeast Australia. Its name means "no drink" and Koalas do get all the water they need from the leaves they eat.Koalas are 65-80 cm long; their fur is greyish-brown and very soft and as they are marsupials, thefemale have a pouch.Their single baby crawls into its mother's pouch when it is born and stays there for six months.Then it comes out and clings to its mother's back.What baby eats is called pap, rich in microorganisms that are essential in breaking down hard-to-digest eucalyptus leaves.So pap readies baby's digestive system for adult food. With the arrival of European settlers, a great part of natural habitat has been destroyed. |
