64kms south of Hughenden, access by 4WD
Our School: Cameron Downs is a rural school situated on a cattle property. The school caters to P-7 years and currently has 8 enrolled students. The students all come from surrounding properties and travel up to 56 kilometres by private vehicle (one-way) to attend the school. We have two buildings. The Administration and Library also hosts the staffroom and contains the main computer banks. This building was the original shearing quarters for the property, and up until 1997, when a new classroom was built on the site. When you think about it, 30 years ago the school was started up by the community. In those days (and up until recent years) the teacher also slept in the same building as the classroom/office and library. It wasn't until the establishment of the teacher's residence that a female teacher was allowed to be Teaching-Principal of the school. Some of the students drove themselves to school in old vehicles and up until recently, some students also rode their motor bikes some 35 kilometres to school. The school has come along way since it was first started up. The students at the school all help out on their parents properties, with mustering, drafting, etc.

We live in a small, tropical, coastal community halfway between Townsville and Cairns, North Queensland Australia.
As an old sugar cane area we have many people from different lands within our school. We celebrate this rich diversity of cultures through NAIDOC Day, multischool days and an annual cluster muster - a celebration of the arts. All students from 4 primary schools delight us with a variety of performances from Indonesian Gamelan to aboriginal dreamtime stories and postcards from many parts of Australia.
